Trying to get with it.

Sometime in the last year, WordPress swallowed my About Me and Archives pages whole and ate them with a side of bacon.  I have made a feeble attempt to construct a new About Me page with my limited computer skills.  The link is over there to the right.  Oh, and the post that link takes you to?  Is right below this.  Whatever,  I’m not exactly in this to win awards for blog design.

About Me

My name is Shalini, rhyme it with “colony” and you’re pronouncing it pretty much right, although my Indian mother might not agree. I play the violin for a living in the greater Los Angeles area which means I spend a lot of time driving on the epic L.A. freeway system. I play in a couple of orchestras, on some TV shows and movies and in various other places but no more wedding gigs, I left that behind in New York.

Run, Lucy, Run started out as a running blog back when I was just getting started with slow, painful loops around the Rose Bowl. I eventually picked up a little endurance and (very) little speed and completed my first half marathon in April of 2008. Lucy is my faithful brown dog who accompanies me on most of my runs during which we try to burn off some of that puppy energy that is still lingering in her at age 4. I am married to Brian, who is a computer genius/musician/most patient man on earth. Our son, Ashok (I have no rhyme for this one yet, check back later) was born in September of 2006 and now makes fairly regular appearances on this site as well. We have a cat who is named after a lawbreaking TV psychic with a Jamaican accent. I’ll let you guess.

I can be contacted at shaliniatrunlucyrundotcom.

I got nothing.

So, apparently, my one week Hawaiian vacation somehow turned into a 3 week blogging vacation.  I have plenty to write about, the vacation recap including posting pictures of a very sandy baby, the baby shower I threw last weekend and how I managed to not only throw a shower but also throw my back out, oh….the shenanigans.  But, I’m lacking in inspiration and I can’t seem to get it up for blogging right now, excuse the euphemism.  I’m sure I’ll get around to it.  In the meantime, I have finally joined Twitter, after months of thinking it might be fun but fearing yet another website I might get addicted to, (Hello, Facebook!, I’m talking to you!  I hate you!).  The good thing about Twitter, is that I don’t even have to have clearly formed thoughts to put something out there.  I think it may work magically for me as I apparently do not have an attention span anymore.

My Debut Album

I am shamelessly stealing this meme from Catherine.  Here are the instructions:

The BAND meme:

1. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Random
The first article title on the page is the name of your band.

2. www.quotationspage.com/random.php3
The last four words of the very last quote is the title of your album.

3. www.flickr.com/explore/interesting/7days/
The third picture, no matter what it is, will be your album cover.

My band name:  Thunder (nice!)

Album title:   “…enough to lend to.” (meh..)

Album Cover :  can be seen here.  Not so Thunder-iffic but a nice picture, nonetheless.

Sea Bass Crack

Seen last night at Whole Foods on their comments board:

I believe this was intended as a compliment.

An Apology

(Yes, I am posting twice today.  Check me out!)

Dear Whole Foods,
Remember when I made fun of you for selling custom butters?  I may have said something callous like, “who needs that?” or I may have used the word “wacky.”

What a fool I have been.  Roasted Garlic Butter is a beautiful, kind and generous thing.  Especially on warm bread, straight from the oven.  Also good on paper towels and fabric softener sheets.  Or so I hear.

Thank you, from the bottom of my heart,

Shalini

Two Pies too Many

Well, that’s not true…one pie too many, possibly.  Damn, those Chocolate Pecan Pies were incredible but we could have just ordered one and been fine until Christmas.  Last night, we had our traditional post-Thanksgiving Tofurkey meal (shut up-it’s good!) complete with stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy.  We always end up doing this since we don’t ever make the big Thanksgiving meal ourselves and consequently never have leftovers.  So, I always wake up on Friday craving stuffing and at some point we make a gigantic meal.  Brian is a vegetarian, so Tofurkey is our non-meat of choice.  And then we have pie.  OH GOD NO MORE PIE.  Well, maybe a little…

This morning I ran my longest distance ever-6.2 miles.  I have a couple of 10K’s in the next few weeks so I wanted to see how that distance would feel.  I managed to get in under an hour (57:29) so I was happy.  Next Saturday’s race will be hilly so I probably won’t be quite that fast but the following Saturday I’m going to do a 10K in Santa Monica that will be pretty flat so that should be a better indicator of my time.  Perhaps a 10K a week will burn off all this pie?  I doubt it.

How NaBloPoMo Almost Killed Thanksgiving

It’s true.  NaBloPoMo almost destroyed my Thanksgiving.  Yesterday morning, after putting our mac & cheese into the oven to bake, Brian ran upstairs to take a shower leaving me with instructions to check on it once the timer went off.  Sure, I said, and sat down at my computer to start sifting through the hundreds of unread blogs in my Bloglines account.  You see, this posting every day business, which has been taken up by so many of the bloggers I read, puts quite a strain on the ol’ Bloglines so I try to get through as many as I can when I have a few minutes to sit down.  Ashok was sleeping, I was dressed and ready to leave for the family dinner.  What else was there to do?

Thirty minutes later, Brian came screaming down the stairs, asking me loudly exactly what it was that I was doing.  I snapped out of my internet-induced stupor, ran out to the living room and found most of the downstairs full of smoke.  Not only had I not heard that timer at all, the mac & cheese had bubbled over, dripping onto the bottom of the oven, the drippings burned, etc, etc.  Luckily, the mac & cheese was fine (actually, it was great-we polished the leftovers off today) but I am still responsible for cleaning the oven.

My next ditz move happened soon thereafter and unfortunately, I can’t blame this one on an internet phenomenon.  We got out to my sister-in-law’s house in Riverside and as we were unloading Ashok and the food out of the car, Brian said, “Oh, don’t forget your keys.”  They were sitting on top of the car, I always put them there when taking Ashok in and out of the car to avoid leaving them inside the car and somehow inadvertently locking him inside (not that that’s ever happened….).  I stopped and stared at them for a moment, trying to comprehend how they got there and just then Brian realized, “Have they been up there since we left home?”  Uh, yes.  I put my keys on top of the car outside our house and since Brian drove and we used his keys, I never noticed that I didn’t have them.  60 minutes and 4 freeways later, they were still there.  Unbelievable.  Somehow they got wedged into a groove in the top of the car and never got dislodged.  Now there’s something to be thankful for.

Almost forgot…..(aka Cop-out post #3)

Tonight was the closest I’ve come to forgetting about NaBloPoMo.  Thank goodness I went to check my email before bed or I would be blissfully asleep right now, unaware of the tragic events unfolding, my dreams of a perfect November dashed.  Ok, I’ve had a bit of wine…..time for bed.
