Whole Foods is Love

November 8th, 2007

This morning, after dropping Ashok off at daycare, I was madly running around town running as many errands as I could before heading back to pick him up.  Between a stop at PetCo for cat nail clippers (she keeps sticking to the carpet, I think that means it’s time to clip them) and a stop at Crate & Barrel for glass food storage containers (I am trying to avoid the plastics), I drove by the brand spankin’ new Whole Foods Market in Pasadena.  Whole Foods is a bit of an obsession for me-I know it’s overpriced, but there’s just so much good stuff there.  I had promised myself that I wouldn’t check out the new store for at least a month because I knew it would be mobbed, but it was a weekday at 11am so I figured I’d give it a go.

First of all, it is two (!) stories with one of those shopping cart escalators like the two story Targets.  Secondly, it is freaking enormous.  I didn’t shop today, I just wandered, but it is hard to imagine getting out of there in less than an hour.  Too much to see, too much to taste.  Here’s just a sampling:

An entire counter of nuts-raw, spiced and flavored…

…candy, candy, and more candy (I lingered here for a while)…

..the Mediterranean Bar, with many different kinds of feta…

…and the wall of yogurts.

Some things seemed unnecessary, like “Custom Butters.”  Really?  Do we need that?  There was also an entire counter devoted to rice pudding.  Ok, Whole Foods, I love you but you can be wacky sometimes.

The Juice Bar

In addition to the juice bar, there was also a wine & tapas lounge, complete with swanky sofas, a coffee bar,  a dining area just next to the sushi chefs and oh…the list goes on.  It was really a little crazy, a pretty perfect example of American excess.   But then again, did you see all that candy?

I’m amazed I got as many clear pictures as I did.  This was my first foray into photographing things other than my family for this blog and I was a little nervous.  I kept thinking a security guard was going to leap out form behind the pastry case and confiscate my iPhone.  Thankfully, I made it out unscathed.  And all I bought was lunch.

The Flagship WF in Austin is like that. I love it there. Does yours have an Indian Food bar? The one in Austin does and it is tote scrumpsh.

I love Whole Foods, too. When I was pregnant, we went there alot on Saturday evenings and just walked around eating samples. It was the only place at the time to get the Greek yogurt we eat, so that was good enough excuse for us.

Two story Targets? Huh? I am still spinning over that one. :-)
