I know these meme things are a little silly, but I find the process of answering these questions oddly comforting right now, so bear with me. Here goes….

48 things you probably never wanted to know in the first place

1. FIRST NAME? Shalini

2. WERE YOU NAMED AFTER ANYONE? Not that I’m aware of. I think my mom just liked the name.
3. WHEN DID YOU LAST CRY? Oh, come on! I just had a baby…it had to be at least 5 minutes ago.

4. DO YOU LIKE YOUR HANDWRITING? When I was a kid, I actually had pretty neat handwriting but at some point in high school decided that it wasn’t “cool” enough so I tried to change it. It has been all screwed up ever since.

5. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE LUNCHMEAT? Roast/Smoked Turkey

6. IF YOU WERE ANOTHER PERSON WOULD YOU BE FRIENDS WITH YOU? I think so, although all the emotional outbursts can be a bit much, really.
7. DO YOU HAVE A JOURNAL? This is as good as it gets. I used to keep one on an old computer and forgot to delete the file before I sold it. Woops.
8. DO YOU STILL HAVE YOUR TONSILS? Yes.

9. WOULD YOU BUNGEE JUMP? I think I might, especially if I have been watching The Amazing Race.
10. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE CEREAL? Currently, it is Trader Joe’s Trek Trail Mix Granola-Antioxidant Nut and Berry Blend. It sounds overwhelming, but it’s really tasty.
11. DO YOU UNTIE YOUR SHOES WHEN YOU TAKE THEM OFF? Yes, but my husband does not.
12. DO YOU THINK YOU ARE STRONG? I gave birth without drugs, so yes, I’m pretty sure I am.
13. WHAT IS YOUR FAVORITE ICE CREAM FLAVOR? This is a hot topic at our house. At the height of my pregnancy related ice cream dementia, it was probably either Ben & Jerry’s Mint Chocolate Cookie or Fosselman’s Cookie Dough.
14. SHOE SIZE? 9

15. RED OR PINK? Red.
16. WHAT IS THE LEAST FAVORITE THING ABOUT YOURSELF? Physically, right now it would have to be my deflated abdomen. Mentally, my inability to relax when I have time off.

17. WHO DO YOU MISS THE MOST? I miss my family in India, especially now that we have this cute baby.
18. DO YOU WANT EVERYONE TO SEND THIS BACK TO YOU? Only if they want to. Actually, Charlie, if you’re reading this, you have to!

19. WHAT COLOR PANTS, SHIRT AND SHOES ARE YOU WEARING? Grey pants, purple shirt, no shoes.
20. LAST THING YOU ATE? Pasta with pesto made by my husband.

21. WHAT ARE YOU LISTENING TO RIGHT NOW? Ashok snoring on the baby monitor.
22. IF YOU WERE A CRAYON, WHAT COLOR WOULD YOU BE? It’s sad, but I always really liked black. Even as a kid. I swear I wasn’t a goth and I never listened to The Cure.
23. FAVORITE SMELL? Garlic and onions being fried together. Smells like the beginning stage of every Indian dish my mom makes.

24. WHO WAS THE LAST PERSON YOU TALKED TO ON THE PHONE? My sister.
25. THE FIRST THING YOU NOTICE ABOUT PEOPLE YOU ARE ATTRACTED TO? Eyes.

26. DO YOU LIKE THE PERSON you stole THIS from? She’s totally awesome. My way maje fave.
27. FAVORITE DRINK? Champagne.

28. FAVORITE SPORT? I’m subjected to quite a bit of basketball in our house, so by default that may be it. Although I got really into the U.S. Open this year and even thought about playing tennis again sometime, so maybe that’s my answer.

29. EYE COLOR? Brown.

30. HAT SIZE? No clue, although my sister says I’m a pinhead.
31. DO YOU WEAR CONTACTS? No.
32. FAVORITE FOOD? I grew up eating Indian food almost every day so that will probably always be my favorite.
33. SCARY MOVIES OR HAPPY ENDINGS? eh…..are there any other choices?
34. IF YOU COULD LIVE ANYWHERE IN THE WORLD, WHERE WOULD THAT BE? I always dreamed of living in San Francisco. There or Italy.

36. HUGS OR KISSES? Some of both.
37. FAVORITE DESSERT? Ice cream.

38. WHO IS MOST LIKELY TO RESPOND? Charlie, because I called him out.
39. LEAST LIKELY TO RESPOND? Everyone else.

40. WHAT BOOKS ARE YOU READING? A slew of baby-rearing books. So much for my post-partum reading list!

42. WHAT DID YOU WATCH LAST NIGHT ON TV? The Amazing Race-and it was the episode my sister worked on!
43. FAVORITE SOUNDS? Lucy howling when she hears sirens.

46. WHAT’S YOUR SPECIAL TALENT? Eating. A lot. In fact, I’m feeling a bit hungry right now….

Why Tivo Sucks

Don’t get me wrong, I love our DVR system. As a newly sleep deprived momma, I depend on it to keep up with my various TV habits. However, when it takes you over 24 hours to watch the season finale of your favorite reality show, you should always remember: DO NOT LOOK AT THE INTERNET. In fact, don’t even turn the computer on. Because you will surely find out what happened. Damn! I guess it’s not really Tivo’s fault, but I need to lay blame somewhere.

I have been venturing out of doors lately……I know, she crazy! I’ve gone for a couple of 2-3 mile walks, which have been remarkable for maintaining my sanity. We even got a fancy new stroller to keep me motivated and on the path to a return to running. I’m not quite ready to run yet, but I think I may be there in a few more weeks. Good God, I’m excited about a stroller….who am I?

The baby boy has been working hard too. When he’s not sleeping all day, he’s busy sucking down as much food as he can. He’s 3 weeks old today and has gained well over a pound in the last 2 weeks-I can’t complain. There was a day a couple of weeks ago when I left the doctor’s office in tears after we found out he had stopped gaining weight. But now he’s chowing down like there’s no tomorrow, thank goodness, and my poor neighbors get a free topless show 10 times a day, whether they like it or not. I have no shame, or maybe I’m just too tired to care.

He’s a good boy. Now if he could just explain his sleep patterns to me, we’d be in great shape.

10 Days Down

Things have been moving along over here, slowly but surely.  Ashok has reached a couple of milestones already in his first 10 days-losing his umbilical cord (which my mother wants to save, eeeeeewwwwwww), having his first bath (pictured) and sleeping for four hours in a row at night (woohoo!).  He is adorable and we love him, even if he does love projectile peeing all over us at every other diaper change.  He’s still a good boy.

I am finally starting to feel somewhat human again.  I am even thinking that by the end of this week I may be ready to go for a WALK.  I know, crazy!  A few days after the baby was born, I tried going for a walk at the Rose Bowl with Brian and my mom-we actually ended up going almost 2 miles because I was feeling alright, but man did I pay for that later.  I learned my lesson, and stayed put for the next week while I recuperated for real.  Now, I’m feeling up for it so maybe I’ll saddle up the stroller and give it a test drive in a few days.

The other big milestone in our lives is that the episode of the Price is Right that I went to is airing this week!  On October 13th, you can tune in and see if you can see my friends and I in our bright yellow “Sweden Loves Bob” t-shirts!

He has arrived…..

Here he is!

Meet our new baby boy Ashok: 5 lbs, 14 oz, and 18.5 inches of pure baby goodness! Born September 28th at 12:17 a.m.-congratulations, Cagey! You’re the big winner of the birthday pool!
Things have been crazy and we’re not getting much sleep-he appears to be quite nocturnal but we couldn’t be happier. My labor was insanely quick with no time for drugs, so consequently it was also excruciating…and that’s all I’ll say about that.

And for those of you who are curious, Ashok means “without sorrow.” So, I guess that means when he cries all night that the world is kicking my ass with irony? Ha, ha. Very funny.

Many thanks to all of you who have been sending supportive thoughts and comments my way over the last 9 months. I’ll try to be back soon with tales of Ashok’s exploits!
